So I didn't make a post yesterday at all, mostly because I was just SOOO tired for some reason. Slept worse than usual I guess. Still pretty tired today but whatever, need to get back to posting regularly. I don't know if I will keep posting every single day, because I don't want to start getting burnt out, but I think one day will be the maximum that I will skip. At least for now, we'll see. Part of the reason for this blog now is to challenge myself creatively, so I want to keep posting as much as I possibly can.
ANYWAY.
A Fool's Last Stand
It's over.
I knew it; I'd known from the start how this was going to end. He probably did too. But I knew he wouldn't be able to resist a fight - if he had anything approaching a weakness, that would be it. All I needed to do was give them enough time to get a way. Just get some distance on him. Have keep going, hold out as long as I can, but so tired...
He's stopped, though. Just standing there. Reveling in it, I suppose. The thick pieces of cloth hanging off him are blotted with stains, old and new. Underneath, his black armor shines a deep red in the light. His face is hidden in the shadow of his hood, save for his glowing red, unblinking eyes. Resting on one shoulder is his gigantic sword, too big to even be used with two hands by the ablest of men. It's covered in slimy, writhing tendrils that seem to be reaching for me. His other arm is covered in ghostly black flames that seem to repel what's left of the natural life around him.
The most disconcerting part about him, though, are his hands. They appear only as dark shapes, as if they themselves were shadows. They reflect no light, it seems. How? We'll likely never know. He's a Dremator, a mageknight that's 'ascended' himself through some ungodly contract with a creature too horrible to exist in this plane. We know not the price that they pay for their powers, but surely it must be great.
We also don't know why they've made such a surge all of a sudden. Sure, they've always been a problem, but of late they've been getting stronger - and more numerous. Whatever's happening now, it looks bad. That's why they had to get out, we just can't fight them off anymore. Even as seasoned mages ourselves, there's only so much we can do. That's why I had to stay behind. This monster and his heathen brothers will surely chase after them. But, if they can make it to the Shining Gates, the Dremators might not like what they find...
Alright old man, up straight. Give them more time. Dig deep and hit him with all you've got left. ...ugh. Feel faint. I try to stable myself against the remains of a tree next to me, but stumble and fall anyway. Forgot, that arm isn't there anymore. The beast took it off with his sword. Not cut, mind. He hacked half-way through it, then the tendrils grabbed it and tore it off the rest of the way. Not sure what happened to it then, was too busy trying to cauterize the wound with a spell.
My fall seems to snap him out of his spell. My moment is over. He plunges his disgusting sword into the ground - doesn't need it anymore. He slowly starts to raise his hands. I swear I can hear him laughing through the wind, which starts whipping up around us. The black flames start whirling around him like a tornado, and his eyes grow brighter, too blinding to look at. My wits leave me, just frozen now. I hear the din of the screams, they and the wind deafen me, the flames blind me.
Then, for the first time, I hear his voice. Cold, deep, and dry, it surrounds me like thunder, but there's almost a strange calmness to it.
"Infinity."
In my last instant my senses are filled with sights, sounds, and other things that my brain cannot even comprehend.
The darkness takes me.
END
So my idea for this one was to try to do a story that basically took place over the course of just one moment. For some reason that seemed like kind of a neat idea. And then I got the idea to make it about a mageknight, because I have always loved those. A giant sword in one hand, fireball in the other, wearing a knight's armor and a mage's robes too. What's more badass than that? Maybe will return to this world sometime, seems like I might be able to get some interesting things out of it.
